Payton was drafted by the New York Mets in the 1st round (29th) of the 1994 MLB June Amateur Draft from Georgia Tech. He played outfield in MLB from 1998-2010 with the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, Baltimore Orioles, Oakland A’s, Boston Red Sox, and San Diego Padres.
