Armstrong originally walked on and played football at Fayette State University. In his junior year, he tried out for basketball and made the team playing for 3 seasons. Armstrong was not selected in the 1991 NBA draft and played in the USBL for the Atlanta Eagles. Armstrong signed with Pezoporikos Larnaca of Cyprus in 1993. For the 1994–95 season, Armstrong played for Coren Ourense of the Spanish Liga ACB. In 1995, he signed as a free agent with the Orlando Magic. Armstrong played of the Magic from 1995-2003, New Orleans Hornets from 2003-2004, Dallas Mavericks from 2005-2006, Indiana Pacers from 2006-2007 and finished his career with the New Jersey Nets from 2007-2008.
