Allison was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 2nd round (44th overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry draft. He played in one game for the Flames in the 1993-94 season. In the 1994-95 season, he played with the Detroit Jr Red Wings. Allison was back on the roster for the Flames in the 1996-1997 season playing with them till he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on October 27, 1998. He played with the Blackhawks till September 28, 2001 when he was claimed off waivers by the Calgary Flames. On March 19, 2002, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the 2002-03 season he played with the Nashville Predators. He was waived by the Predators and signed with the Ottawa Senators to close out his NHL career in the 2005-06 season. He played in 372 games scoring 31 goals.
