Grier was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 9th round (219th overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded by the Blues to the Edmonton Oilers in 1995. He played with the Oilers till October 2, 2002 when he was traded to the Washington Capitals. On March 9, 2004, he was traded by the Capitals to the Buffalo Sabres. On July 3, 2006, he signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks. On August 10, 2009, he signed with the Sabres as a free agent. Grier retired on December 1, 2011. During his NHL career, he played in 1,060 games scoring 383 points. Grier is currently the general manager of the San Jose Sharks.
