Dunston was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 1st round (1st) of the 1982 MLB June Amateur Draft from Thomas Jefferson HS (Brooklyn, NY). He made his MLB debut on April 9, 1985 vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played shortstop for the Cubs till 1995 when he was granted free agency. He signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1996 and played in 82 games that season. He was granted free agency at the end of 1996 and signed with the Cubs for 1997. On August 31, 1997, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was granted free agency at the end of the season and signed with the Cleveland Indians for 1998. On July 23, 1998, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants. He was granted free agency at the end of 1998. In 1999, he signed with the St Louis Cardinals. On July 31, 1999, he was traded to the New York Mets. He was granted free agency at the end of the 1999 season. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals for 2000. He was granted free agency at the end of the 2000 season. He signed with the San Francisco Giants for 2001. He played with the Giants for 2001 & 2002.
